Men's Health Magazine Rankings
In the several issues over the last year, Men’s Health magazine ranked 101 American cities in several different categories which reflect quality of life and health.
In every case, a lower number indicates a better mark. Here’s a recap, along with the standards for comparison. Grand Rapids and Detroit were the only cities in Michigan which were ranked.
The Robbery Report,
based on robbery, burglary, motor vehicle theft, identity theft, computer intrusion (hacking, then stealing data)
Grand Rapids # 16 with a grade of B+ Detroit # 93 with a grade of D-
Fast Food Consumption,
based on the percentage of people who say they eat at fast food restaurants 2-3 times per week,
the number of McDonald’s restaurants per capita, and the percentage of clinically obese people
Grand Rapids # 12 with a grade of A
Detroit # 83 with a grade of D-
Urban Ashtray,
based on places with smoke-free laws, Centers for Disease Control statistics on smokers, and lung cancer deaths
Grand Rapids # 61 with a grade of C
Detroit # 95 with a grade of F
Couch Bound,
based on how many people exercise or play a sport, how many exercise two times a week or more,
number of households that don’t watch TV, and daily number of miles logged in cars
Grand Rapids # 36 with a grade of B-
Detroit # 55 with a grade of C
Happiest,
based on antidepressant sales, suicide rates, and number of days inhabitants report bring depressed
Grand Rapids # 34 with a grade of C+
Detroit # 100 with a grade of F
Where the Food is Sickening,
based on outbreaks of foodborne disease, number of people who have died from tainted food, and adoption
of the FDA’s uniform Food Code which contains rules for keeping restaurant kitchens clean
Detroit # 22 with a grade of B-
Grand Rapids # 55 with a grade of C-
Where the Sex is Dirty,
based on Centers for Disease Control data on STD rates and on HIV mortality rates
Grand Rapids # 44 with a grade of C+
Detroit # 101 with a grade of F
